Go to (play in) your room

When I was a kid, I remember thinking that the whole go-to-your-room punishment didn't make much sense. I mean, that's where I kept my toys. My room was a place to have fun, not a place to sulk and think about what I had done.

But I think I get it now. Sometimes go-to-your-room is a parent's desperate plea, an excuse for sending a misbehaving and obviously-bored child somewhere else to give him a change of scenery, and maybe, if the parent is lucky, the child will be distracted by another sea of toys and simply stay there.

Of course, there are times when a child may be legitimately distraught by his or her actions and will simply sulk and think. But often around here, the go-to-your-room "suggestion" simply means please go play somewhere else.

Is that so wrong?

Hehe. I too remember the day it dawned on me that going to my room wasn't actually a punishment.

PRETTY BANNER, Becky!!!

My parents never sent me to my room as punishment. My dad often told me (angrily) to "get out of [his] sight"... and I always *chose* to go to my room :)

My room was *my* room. My refuge. My little mini vacation from the evil parent people ;)

I think for many kids, especially little ones, the punishment aspect of being sent/put in your room as being told they have to be by themselves.

95% of MF's toys are in the sitting room/playroom. He only has a small stack of books and a selection of stuffed animals in his little room... getting sent to his room for poor behaviour is not a lot of fun for him, even if it's only for two minute timeouts, etc.

Yes! I remember having those thoughts exactly. And then realizing as a parent that I just want the child out of my presence and what better place to make that happen than their room?

Our kids won't have rooms with computers, televisions and such but so many kids do these days going to your room wouldn't be such a bad thing. In fact you are more likely to be in there in the first place.

Rather than sending them to their room when they're loud or misbehaving, I just leave the house. Actually I should probably be getting back there.

That's why you should fill his room with rusted nails and rotten meat.

That'll learn 'im.
